Tarpon, a prehistoric fish, have lived on earth for as long as 100 million years. A unique characteristic of this bony fish is that they have an air bladder and they absorb oxygen from the air. That is why they go to the surface to get air through their mouth. Tarpon fish live in warm saltwater, freshwater, and even in stagnant water! Tarpon are large but fragile fish. They are also called sabalo real, silver fish, and silver king. This interesting fish has no food value, they can grow up to 2 feet long, and some may live up to 50 years!

Experienced anglers know that tarpon fishing has to be done in the right fishing spot, during the right tide, and at the right time of the day. tarpon are true lunar fish and knowing how moon phases influence them makes fishing for tarpon easier!

The largest snook and tarpon tend to coincide with the mullet. They run in late summer and early fall, August, September and October, as well as late spring, April, May, and June.
